Opening Day

There are a lot of guys (including Chris) who look forward to baseball's Opening Day and watching their favorite team play the first home game of the year. Around here it's usually cold and in the 30s but nobody cares because they have waited 6 months for it and will sit through rain, sleet or snow. The same excitement holds true at our house but in a slightly different way.

Around January the kids started asking when they could play in the sandbox. Currently our sandbox sits directly outside our patio door. Every morning around breakfast they stare out window at the sandbox which is covered with a blue tarp wishing and hoping it would be the day to play in it. If I ever mentioned it was a warm day outside (45 degrees or better - that's warm to us after the winter we had) they would yell out "SANDBOX". I hated it when I said "No, not yet" and crushed their little hearts.

This morning they woke up and it was sunny and beautiful (we are supposed to hit 65). They asked about the sandbox and today I said "YES". Their eyes gleamed and their mouths smiled. They were filled with so much joy.

After breakfast, a workout for mommy (playtime for the kids) and getting dressed we went outside and uncovered the sandbox. They ran to the garage to collect their pails, shovels, construction diggers and other sand items. They haven't seen any of the sand toys since last October. Each new thing they pulled out was like Christmas over again. They played for 20 minutes while I took the time to rake up leaves and sticks throughout the yard. Then I joined them in the sand and we built sand castles. The castles didn't last long as their favorite thing today was to wreck them as soon I lifted the bucket up.

I look forward to watching them play in their sandbox for the next 5 months and seeing what they can create or where their imaginations take them. Also Jake will be receiving a few new construction trucks for his birthday this year that will be perfect for making a building site in the sand. Shhhh...it's a secret don't tell him.
