Grandma Donna

The last 3 days have been tough for us. On Friday I received news from my mom that my maternal Grandma passed away in her sleep the night before (Valentines night). It was a shock to all of us. She was in very good health for her age (77 years old). We were told her heart stopped pumping and she died peacefully. I'm going to miss her very much. We have not spent a lot of time with each other over the years (she lived in California most of my life and only recently moved to Wisconsin about 2-3 years ago), but when we did see each other she was full of energy and very interested in our lives and she loved seeing her great-grandkids. She was a crafty lady who could sew (she would make my sisters and I 3 piece outfits and dresses when we little girls), knit (she made beautiful blankets, pillows, scarves..you name it) and recently her hobby was making floor rugs out of ripped up sheets (it was a technique by weaving and knotting long thin strips of old sheets and creating a gorgeous rug, I cannot remember the name of the technique).

From ages 7-15 years old I spent 2 weeks of my summer vacations with my grandparents in California (the early years in San Francisco and later years in Escondido - near San Diego). I have many great memories of those trips.

Tomorrow afternoon all four of us will be driving to Madison to attend the funeral. I have not had a chance to completely morn the loss of my grandma since I have been here without the presence of my immediate family. The first thing I want to do is give my mom a BIG Hug and tell her it's going to be alright. She misses my Grandma very much and she may never be the same because of this. When my grandparents moved from CA to WI they moved into a place right across the street from my mom's house. She helped them with anything they needed and saw them almost every day.

The photo above was from Thanksgiving Thanksgiving 2005. After Casey was born we wanted a 4 generation photo. I'm thankful I will have this photo forever and able to show Casey pictures of her great-grandma.
